This is a restoration of a freedman's cottage dating from the 1890s. The interior had been substantially modified over time, but when we removed the sheetrock and partition walls, we discovered that the original tongue-and-groove wood was largely intact. We went to great lengths to preserve the original wood and paint where possible, and to adapt it in creative ways where we had to add a kitchen and bathrooms. The house is now highly energy efficient, with spray-foam insulation and a geothermal heat pump. It was completed in 2008. Designed as a collaboration between George Holt and Andrew Gould.
