Saints Joseph and Andrew Orthodox Church
Ss. Joseph and Andrew Eastern Orthodox Church was a small mission located on twelve acres of beautiful farmland near Asheville. Andrew designed the parish hall, rectory, and future church and bell tower. The complex is inspired by a Medieval monastery, with buildings grouped close together within a stone wall. The church is Byzantine in style, but other buildings are inspired by vernacular American architecture. Andrew designed the ensemble to feel as if it had evolved organically long ago, an expression of American Orthodoxy as it might have been. It has elements that hearken to the Medieval Orient, but at the same time it is simple, calm, and practical, at home in rural Appalachia. The parish hall and rectory were built in 2007. Sadly, the mission closed in 2019.
