Saint Mary, Corning, NY
Saint Mary Orthodox Church in Corning, New York, moved out of their ageing historic structure and built a modern multi-purpose building. They asked Andrew to design an interior upfit of a rough-framed space to serve as the temple.
Andrew designed an arched apse and a pair of timber-frame arcades to divide the wide space like a basilica, and specified wood ceilings and wainscot throughout. The iconostasis is uniquely American, designed in Classical simplicity with the American appreciation for fine woodworking in mind. Andrew designed the custom doors, window grilles, and altar as well. The pews and the stain-glass window in the altar were brought from the former church.
The woodwork was crafted from Douglas Fir by a local Amish carpenter, and the icons were painted by Brian Whirledge.
