Saint John Monastery Chapel
The monastery of St. John Maximovich in Cobleskill, NY, asked Andrew to design their new chapel, with an unusual caveat - it was to be created within the shell of a former racquetball court at their newly-acquired property! Andrew thickened and plastered the walls and added clerestory windows with canted openings. The design also includes a coffered wood-paneled ceiling, and an exquisite floor using tiles handmade in Nicaragua. Andrew collaborated with a Romanian wood-carving studio to develop the design for the extensive woodwork that lines the walls of the room. Currently under construction, and being painted by iconographer Dmitri Shkolnik, this previously blank and windowless room is becoming a jewel box of Byzantine liturgical beauty.
