St. Cornelius, Amersfoort, The Netherlands
Saint Cornelius Orthodox Church is a parish of the Moscow Patriarchate. The rector is Dutch and his congregation is primarily refugees from the Middle East and North Africa. Because the parish does not have strong roots in any other country, they wished for a church design that looks Dutch, but infused with the ethos of Orthodoxy. Andrew designed a simple gracious basilica inspired by early-Romanesque churches and old Dutch farmhouses. The prominent site is located at the bend in a canal and across the street from a train station. It called for a courtyard overlooking the water and a substantial tower/gatehouse with a Dutch carillon for the enjoyment of the community.
